The festival of zine culture and independent arts is back in Ottawa for a second year celebrating zines, comics, and all forms of DIY publishing!

Canzine Ottawa 2019 Programming

Massive zine fair and underground print marketplace • 12pm – 6pm • Alma Duncan Salon (Third Floor)

Hundreds of zines, comics and small press works from the Ottawa community and around the world on sale and on display.

Pop-Up Zine Library: Home? Zines in Diaspora • 12pm-6pm •  Artist Talk at 3:30pm • OAG Sky Lounge (Third Floor)

Over the course of the last year, zinester and Broken Pencil columnist Rabeea Syed invited Black, Indigenous, and other POC artists to make zines around the theme of Home. The result is a library unpacking diaspora and place-making, movement and ambiguity. This year, Canzine visitors are invited to take a moment away from the busy zine fair and spend some time with these zines and consider their own relationship to home. Join for an informal and participatory artist talk at 3:30pm.

Creative Sundays: Canzine Edition • 10am-2pm • OAG Studio (First Floor)

Come by the gallery’s free weekly arts drop-in for all ages and join in a special zine jam as part of the all-day zine festival at OAG. We’ll be cutting, folding, collaging and typing our way to creating our own fanzines, comics, and tiny books to take home or to share with others. Materials provided!

Community Wisdom Tours: Facing Claude Cahun & Marcel Moore •  1pm, 2pm, & 3pm •  Meet at the Canzine Welcome Table, (Third Floor)

Take a tour of the OAG exhibition Facing Claude Cahun & Marcel Moore — the genderqueer photography of early 20th century artists Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore. Each hourly tour will be led by a queer, trans, or gender non-conforming  zine artist, who will ground the tour in their own experience and response to the work.

After Work Club presented by Possible Worlds • 2pm-5pm • Canzine partner event next door at Club SAW

In their first art + music edition, join Possible Worlds for an afternoon of DJ beats + zine-making. Sets by Jason Skilz, KJ Maxx + live set by Wellington Sanipe. Drop in anytime from 2-5 PM to make your own zine project or contribute to a collective zine on the theme of Action. You’ll have access to a variety of materials, tools and instructions. Experiment with and manipulate images, text and colour to tell a story. Participants will receive a copy of the collective zine.

All-Ages Drop-in Workshop: These Are Not The Beasts of My Youth •  2pm-4pm •  OAG Studio (First Floor)

Using visual and written prompts, poet Matthew Walsh (These Are Not the Potatoes of My Youth) and short story writer J.R. McConvey (Different Beasts) invite participants to write a postcard to their favourite “beast” (real or imagined). Take the card home or add it to the “Wall of Beasts”. This workshop is for all ages! Signed books by both authors will be available at the event for purchase.
