May 17-20 in Montreal: The Great Transition, Preparing a World Beyond Capitalism

The Great Transition is an international conference that will take place in Montreal from May 17 to 20, 2018. This 4-day event aims to bring together a thousand participants to discuss critiques of capitalism, strategies for overcoming it, and models of alternative economic organization. In other words, it is about thinking of the great transition out of capitalism, for a social and economic alternative that would be ecological, feminist, egalitarian and democratic.

The Great Transition will combine two annual events: the North American edition of Historical Materialism and the Summer School of the Nouveaux cahiers du socialisme. Historical Materialism is an annual conference that brings together more than 300 international academics each year, while the Summer School of the Nouveaux cahiers du socialisme offers a variety of critical courses accessible to the general public and reaches a few hundred people annually. The Great Transition will therefore offer a bilingual program in two parts. One of which will be addressed to the general public, and the other which will consist of more in-depth workshops.

The conference has three main objectives: (1) to promote alternatives to capitalism; (2) to equip social movements and transformative initiatives with better theoretical tools by sharing experiences and knowledge; and (3) to strengthen ties between critical academic circles and militant organizations, as well as between Francophone and Anglophone communities in North America. La Grande transition est une conférence internationale qui aura lieu à Montréal du 17 au 20 mai 2018. Cet événement de 4 jours vise à rassembler un millier de participant.e.s pour discuter des critiques du capitalisme, des stratégies qui visent son dépassement et des modèles d’organisation économique alternatifs. En d’autres mots, il s’agit de réfléchir la grande transition hors du capitalisme, pour une alternative sociale et économique qui soit écologique, féministe, égalitaire et démocratique.

La Grande transition combinera deux événements annuels: l’édition nord-américaine d’Historical Materialism ainsi que l’école d’été des Nouveaux Cahiers du Socialisme. Historical Materialism est une conférence annuelle qui regroupe chaque année plus de 300 chercheurs internationaux critiques du capitalisme, alors que l’école d’été des Nouveaux Cahiers du Socialisme offre une variété de cours critiques accessibles au grand public et rejoint annuellement quelques centaines de personnes.
